75% alcohol is the time tested disinfectant widely used in hospitals, dental practices, hotels, care homes, nurseries, offices and general household. It is effective, kills 99.9% of germs as well as all known flu viruses; it acts quickly, rub your hands till dry takes only approx. 30 seconds; it is safe, people have been using it for thousands of years, and it is cheap: now a bottle of 500ml hand sanitiser costs as little as £2.92 each at Allcam (when you purchase min. 24 bottles).
Is 75% alcohol hand sanitisers better than those 70% ones? Yes absolutely. Although 70% alcohol is almost as effective as 75% one, the issue is alcohol is much more volatile than water, so the alcohol concentration will drop automatically as time goes on. It is common for alcohol concentration in hand sanitisers dropping 5% to 10% from when it is bottled in the factory to when it is actually used. So 75% becomes 70% which is still as effective, but 70% becomes 65% which is no longer as effective. Researches sponsored by CDC showed 60% alcohol may only reduce the growth of germs rather than killing them outright.
