How to assemble a external USB hard drive?
Step 1. Preparation
Before start, check that you have got all the following ready:
3.5" desktop hard drive; USB
desktop hard drive enclosure, and screw driver of proper
size.
Step 2. Assemling
| I. Take out the hard drive, remove
the top cover of the enclosure, place the circuit board
of the enclosure and the hard drive in a line, with printed
/ label side facing upward, as (picture 1); |
 |
|
II. Connect the hard drive to the black ribbon
cable of the circuit board and the white power cable
(picture 1); and push the hard drive close to the circuit
board along the rail; attention must given the power
cable connector at the circuit board side (the "White
Pole"), power connection at this point is critical
for the hard drive and is very fragile.
You can test the USB hard drive at this point, connect
the power, you should hear the noise of the hard drive
trying to start along with the noise of the fan, and
the green LED flashed a short while. If only the noise
of fan is heard, the power connection at the "White
Pole" is loose. Try addjust the position of the
cable, and you may pull out the plug (circuit board
side), and adjust the four pins.

III. Fix the hard drive to the rail, then fix
the top cover (picture 3).

active;

Step 3. Fdisk & Format the drive:
This step is exactly the same as if a new hard drive is fixed
inside a computer, and the USB makes this step possible to
be accomplished under Windows, a great news for those who
hate DOS.
If the hard drive is new, it must be DOS partitioned before
the drive hard can appear in "My computer" as a
new driver (as E:), and this new driver (as E:) must be formatted
before it can stored any data.
Run "Fdisk", choose option 5, then 1, then 1, after
this completed, a new driver letter (such as E:) will be assigned
to USB hard drive.
Then run "Format E:" (please note E: is the new
driver letter assigned!), when this completed, you can see
the volume of the drive in Windows Explorer, and it is ready
to store data.
