FAQ on external DVD burners

1. How do I know the products I received is really a Sony / Toshiba / Pioneer DVD burner? / I ordered a Sony DVD burner but received a DVD burner with no name?

Answer: This external DVD burner is OEM product so Sony / Toshiba / Pioneer name is not printed on the product or the package, to check the real identity of this products, just connect this to the computer, and then check "Device manager" --> "DVD / CD-ROM drivers", and you should find "Sony DVD RW **** USB device" or "Pioneer DVR-112D**** USB device" or "Toshiba DVD SD-R5112 **** USB device" listed thereunder.

2. What does DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM mean?

Answer: They are all different recordable DVD media. DVD-R and DVD+R is a write once DVD media, DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM are all re-writable, currently DVD-R /RW and DVD+R/RW are the most popular DVD media and neither have clear advantage over the other. For DVD backup, it is better to use DVD-R as it has the best compatibility with DVD players and DVD drives. Good quality media such as Ritek is also recommended for best compatibility.

3. I don't know if my computer have USB 1.1 or USB 2.0? Is the external DVD burners compatible with USB 1.1?

A: Yes it is compatible with USB 1.1. However you will be only able to burn CD and read CD / DVD, you can not burn DVD because the speed is too slow. To check if your USB port is USB 2.0 or standard USB 1.1, go to "Control Panel" --> "Device Manager" --> "Universal Serial Bus Controller" to see if you have "USB 2.0 Root Hub" listed or "Enhanced Universal Serial Bus Controller" thereunder.

4. Is any of your external DVD burners compatible with Mac?

Yes, try the Pioneer DVD burners has natural support for MAC (DVD burner has MAC compatible firmware builtin), such as Pioneer DVR-112D. Actually most other DVD burners (except LG burner) can also be used under mac using a software call Patchburn.
