What can they do? Firewire / USB enclosure+hard drive = external hard drive!

The USB / USB2.0 / Firewire enclosures are supported by the following O.S.: Windows 98 SE, Windows ME & 2000 & XP, MAC OS 9.0 (you may need to download patched from MAC website) or higher. *Note: USB are not supported by Windows NT.

You maybe able to use these device under Linux, please check the Linux installation guide first.

For PC:

• Pentium II 200 MHz or higher;
• 128 MB Ram

For MAC:

• PowerPC G4, iMAC or later;
• Free disk space: 20 MB.

FAQ:

1. Can any of your 3.5" / 5.25" drive cases be powered via USB / Firewire bus power alone?

No. It is not possible. The 3.5" / 5.25" drives need two voltage supply: 5 V and 12 V, and the USB and Firewire bus can only supply 5 V. Furthermore the USB/Firewire bus power is limited to 500 mA (5 V)which is not enough for the 3.5"/5.25" drives.

2. What is ATA? IDE? PATA? ATA100/ATA133? SATA? and differences?

They are all storage interfaces. ATA = IDE = PATA which are different from Serial ATA (SATA). ATA100 and ATA133 are two ATA interfaces with different speed. The common hard drive / DVD drives come with ATA/IDE interface. SATA is a new technology designed to replaced the ATA/IDE interface. The main adavantage over SATA of IDE/PATA is faster data speed, compact cables, and hot-swapping. Most 3.5" SATA hard drives still retain the old 4pin power socket in addition to the new 15 pin SATA power socket (see image below), but you only need to connect one power source (not both).
